Confinement Playlist #9 - Sami Fitz
Sami Fitz is a classically trained singer and self-taught musician who creates unusual soundscapes made of experimental, ambient, pop, spoken word, and folk. Here is a beautiful playlist of what she's listening to during this global lockdown.
1. Carpenters - Close to You
I think this album is the closest you’ll ever get to floating on clouds in the sky. It makes me feel so much love and with so much uncertainty going on it's nice to listen to something beautiful. 2. The Books - The Lemon of Pink This album is quirky and interesting and f*ing good. I didn’t know about The Books until a producer I worked with mentioned them. It was instant love when I heard them. The Books’ use of noise, melody, and voice is so unique. Feels like you are remembering a memory of a memory you had in a dream. 3. Helado Negro - This is How You Smile This album feels like a hug when you need one! And I think everyone needs one of those right now. Helado’s voice and these thoughtfully crafted arrangements linger with you for days. It’s gorgeous and lush and yet still very honest - the songs and stories make you feel like you can get through anything. 4. Nina Simone - It Is Finished There’s not much I can say about Nina Simone that hasn’t already been said. This is one of my favourite albums and it makes me feel good - I hope it does the same for you. Plus, I really miss live music! 5. Keeley Forsyth - Debris
You are going to fall in love with Keeley’s voice. I’m drawn to how minimal and full and dark this album is. It feels like you are inside her head. It reminds me a lot of Nico’s Desertshore - which is one of my favourite albums of all time - so I’m going to put that next on the list… 6. Nico - Desertshore See above. This album is so surprising and elegant. I hear something new every time I listen to it. 7. Marianne Faithfull - Negative Capability This album is incredibly bewitching. Faithfull reveals all the dimensions of her voice - it’s vulnerable, raw, and candid. I love hearing her voice move and shift with time.
8. Tom Petty - Wildflowers -
I just think this one is a perfect album. The songs speak for themselves. It’s just really incredible songwriting.
